I’ve been doing a million family photos lately (‘tis the season!) and Mount Falcon East trailhead has been one of my favorite spots this Fall (along with Mount Falcon West trailhead)! Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Sophia and her family and I had such a fun time capturing them! The kids were awesome and really warmed up quickly to the camera, which always makes my job a little easier. Being a Denver photographer, I see my share of Denver families and weather and have to be prepared for whatever weather we get! Luckily, we got great weather and it couldn’t have been more picture perfect.
Mount Falcon East is perfect for Denver family photos and is over near Morrison, just south of Red Rocks. It overlooks Red Rocks and the front range and has beautiful tall grasses that give nice neutral tones for photos. The only downside is that there are no trees, so if trees are important to your Denver family photos, then this is not the place! Also, the sun goes down behind the mountain a lot earlier than the official time of sunset, so that is something to keep in mind. We’d want to start about 90 minutes before sunset to get the perfect lighting.
We timed the start time so that the sun was just above the mountain, to get the warm, sun flare effect! This is one of my favorite ways to shoot and I think it adds such a vibe to the photos. We timed it perfectly and then had the rest of the session with soft light. It was a perfect day with blue skies.
