Christian recently hired me as a Denver photographer to take personal branding and dating photos of him during his layover in Denver! He’s from Alabama and was in town for just a few hours, landing at 7pm and leaving at midnight. What a challenge! I knew light was going to be terrible and I had never done any photos around Denver International Airport before.
Christian is a pilot and was hoping to get photos with planes at the private terminal at DIA (Signature). Because he’s a pilot, he’s been able to access the private ramp prior to this but because the NCAA tournament was happening in Denver that weekend, there were lots of teams flying into that terminal and they were being a little more secure with who they let on the tarmac. That being said, we weren’t able to go out on to the ramp and get any photos with planes.
So we had to come up with plan B. He still wanted to do the shoot and we had to scramble to use any last night that we had. We got some really cool “twilight” photos and then we headed over to the main terminal of DIA. We basically had to use any light source we could find and it ended up working out pretty well. We started with a parking garage and then made our way into the main terminal and over to the Westin hotel area. There were some really cool things to use as backdrops and it gave the “traveler” vibe to Christian, which is what he wanted.
Also near the Westin hotel was the RTD train which takes travelers into Union Station in Denver. We got a cool shot of him “boarding” the train and it just helped the overall “traveler” look and vibe that we were trying to achieve.
I told my wife this was sort of like a game challenge for me. A new place I had never done a photoshoot at and with lighting that I normally never shoot in (I normally do photoshoots before sunset so there is plenty of natural light). I felt like a contestant on a Food Network show given weird ingredients and told to make something totally different than what they are used to.
I think we did pretty good! I think the photos turned out awesome and Christian was super happy with them! He didn’t specifically hire me for dating photos, but he is single and is definitely going to use some on his online dating profiles. This is the benefit of doing a photoshoot these days! So many different channels to use your photos!
